The Spitfire... Everyone knows its name... The review of a small model, but a big airplane!
The spitfire was one of the highest performance airplanes during the battle of England. Most of the persons still know it by its characteristic Merlin engine noise.
It underwent by many upgrandes, receiving more powerfull engines, getting faster, but ending up loosing its agility. The Mk V was one of the variants built in higher numbers. Its eliptical wings had wingtips that could be removed for better low altitude performance.
Portugal acquired MkIa, LF MkVb and Mk5b in 1942, due to the agreement for the allies to use Açores air base, being scrapped in 1955.
About the model kit, this is Revell Spitfire MkV in 1/72. This one was released in 1996, and it can be quite good. I only had one drawback: when I was performing the holes on the wings, it simply cracked.
This plastic is either too old, or too bad… Nevertheless, it ended up a nice end result. The landing gear wells are acceptable.
Cockpit is actually good and nicelly detailed. The overall details are in nicelly done recessed panel lines.
You can build the normal or the clipped wing version.
I've done my own decals to do the Portuguese version of the MkV. As a final remark, you only have to be carefull while handling it, as it is too brittle. Except for that, it can become a nice little airplane.
