The
Lavochkin La5 was one of the first Russian fighters which was capable to face
the Me109 and the Fw190.
It was designed in the mid thirties, but the in line
engines didn't had enough power to give it its theoretical performance. The
later designed used a radial engine, which made it look like the Fw190, even on
the detail of both having turbines to force the air inside the cowling, to keep
it cool.
But the Lavochkin, even if docile in its behaviour, was all manual, just to speed up the engine, 6 levers had to be moved to keep it on the best performance. Even if it could match up its rivals in the right hands, it could only do that in the low altitudes of the eastern front battlefield, not a match for them on high altitude fights.
About the model kit, its an old Lavochkin La5 FN Italeri kit. Its not a bad one, after figuring out how to read the instructions, it becomes quite easy.
Can be
further detailed, but out of the box can be fairly good. landing gear wells are
not astonishing, but at least they hide the inside.
There may be a lack of
details on the surface, but if we do look for pictures of the real one, we'll
realise that it doesn’t have them either…
Can be a little tricky for beginners, mostly because of the unconventional instructions, but the assembly is really easy, without big gaps. It doesn't need that much sanding… Decals provided are for 2 versions: one which was a German captured La5, and another from the soviet air force.
Overall, it is a nice model, with some nice tales to tell.
P.S. Video review in here.
