Revell 1/144 Boeing 747-200 SAS cutaway

Another old kit. From a classic! The queen of the sky, in a cutaway version.
The 747 created a story of its own... Designed in the sixties, without computers, all hand calculations, makes it a marvell of engineering. It is amazing how long its main design wasnt changed significantly. Too much can be saied on it, like it was the competition looser for the big cargo airplane, where the C5 Galaxy won... And the reason for the "hump" was to leave the cargo area cleared, and the pilots and staff could go on the "hump"... When it was converted to passengers, Airline companies didn't quite knew what to do with it, because it seemed too big... And they've made a "lounge" for the first class passengers....

Only years later it was decided to use that space with more chairs and sell more seats!
This model is from the -200 version, already with some improvements.

There is one detail about this kit: except for the interior and the engines, this fuselage is still sold as this:
This "no interior variant" will have soon a review of its own... But I'll leave a warning right now: get ready for "flash"... This is still the same mould, and it has deteriorated a lot... Believe me...
But as this cutaway version was brand new at the time, this kit itself is pretty. The big fail in terms of detail, is on the seats.

You see nothing wrong, right? wrong... Its not on painting them, that can be easy... The problem is that the original seating was 3-4-3, but the model has 3-4-2, there is a complete set of seats missing... you will only notice if you count, and it is perceptible that they are missing so that everything fits and looks on scale... But... it is missing.
Nevertheless, it does look great!

The landing gear is a challenge of its own... it is not easy to make all the 4 landing gear wheels touch the ground... You'll have to make adjustments, but it is not that hard. Landing gear wells are not that much detailled, but are adequate... Unlike the L-1011 model, these landing gears don't look that bad!. They look nice actually! except if you buy the newer kits... on those, get ready to do some cutting of bleeding plastic...
Its unique... Old... Rare and expensive. So, if you find it at a nice price, don't look back, just take it and build it! You'll be imagining you're inside of it soon!

  1. Nice work! One comment: The seating 3+4+2 is actually correct. This is the seating when the aircraft was delivered, but to make room for more passengers SAS changed this to 3+4+3 after a couple of years. They also converted the upstairs lounge to a traditional passenger seating. Regards Roland E

    1. I knew about the lounge... But all the records I've found about the seating were 3+4+3... But I had no idea it had been delivered with 3+4+2... But the fact is, when it was released, I think no one believed it would take as much passengers in one time... Probably the airlines themselves thought it would be hard to fill it up to a single journey...
